February 2012 Newsletter

Dear Fellow Members and Friends,

Our first meeting of the New Year was Monday, January 9th. We celebrated Founders Day and a report was given by Ruth Berry of the nominating committee. Ruth stated that Rick Lange, our second vice president and Pam Simones, our secretary have agreed to another term. According to Article IX, section 2 of our by-laws, our election will take place at our February meeting. Nominations from the floor will be accepted, providing the nominees are club members in good standing and have given their consent to become candidates. Article V, section 2 states: Should there be only one candidate, the voting may be by viva voce.

A special performance was given by our members, Penny Gillespie and Rick Lange. In addition, a discussion began regarding articles 1 and 2 of our by-laws. A vote by the members will be taken to amend these 2 articles in the near future.

For anyone that would like to attend, the next board meeting will occur February 6th at 9:30 am. The meeting of the executive board will take place at Rick Lange's Harmony Gardens. Rick's address is 11231 Bayshore Road. The directions to Rick's home are: from I-75 exit 143, go East on Bayshore Road 2 miles and at 11231 turn left into his driveway.

The next concert in our series will feature Julian Toha on March 23rd and 24th. The 2012 Infinite Potential Tour will feature a 2 day packed event sponsored by Calusa Musicale and hosted by Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church. Julian will kick off with an assembly/workshop for students on Friday, March 23rd at 5:30 pm. Julian developed this workshop last year for the purpose of an MTNA lecture. It will introduce methods of practice and thought, as well as interactive moments with the students. Julian looks at each type of artist (chef, painter, dancer...) and imagines how they would practice piano. Looking from a new direction, this allows students to make practicing more engaging. This is best for students, but teachers and parents are encouraged to come. For this to happen, I need everyone’s help in getting lots of music students to this assembly/workshop. For those that will be attending the workshop and staying for the concert, Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church will have their kitchen open to purchase a delicious dinner.

That night at 7 pm, Julian will be performing his Infinite Potential concert! This concert will feature the use of 3D video, surround sound additions and a creative use of projections.

The next morning, Saturday, March 24th at 10 am, Julian will give a master class for 4-6 students of Calusa Musicale. This is an opportunity to showcase some students who feel confident performing for their peers and are looking for constructive criticism. Julian plans to approach this master class utilizing the Socratic method and an imaginative mindset. Julian suggests booking the students who really are prepared to challenge the depths of their creative thought and performance techniques. This can be any level performer as long as they come with an open mind. There will be a reception following the master class. To make a reservation please email me at mrorganboy@yahoo.com.

WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!

This concert event will be engaging for all audiences, including middle and high school students. Julian will also be selling his CD's. The cost of admission to all three events will be a “Good-Will” offering and all proceeds will go to Calusa Musicale.

The Scholarship Benefit Concert will be April 1, 2012 and the Cavalcade of Youth Concert will be May 6, 2012. Scholarship ads and grace notes are a vital part of our fundraising. Please take out an ad and send in your checks as soon as possible. An ad/grace note form request has been attached with this email.

Our next meeting will take place on Monday, February 13th. Our “Love Songs” concert is open to all members that would like to perform a Valentine's song or two. Please let Ruth Berry or myself know if you would like to perform. Please bring a guest musician or music lover with you as new members are always welcome. A new member’s application is attached to this email. We ask everyone to start gathering at 10:00am for fellowship and refreshments. The meeting will kick off at 10:30 am. The meeting is at the Edison Congregational Church, 1619 Llewellyn Dr. in Fort Myers.
